History

Given the controversial cost overruns and formal excesses already reported during Madrid 2116, the IOC jury needed to reverse its deteriorated image by betting on maximum sobriety for the next event. The project of the winning team of architects, African and based in Nairobi itself, convinced the Olympic Committee both for its simplicity of lines and for its low cost and high energy efficiency.

Intelligent state-of-the-art software was used to design it, providing it with the most efficient climate technology and thus providing maximum comfort for both athletes and spectators.

Built 100% with materials from the area, it eliminates the classic pit and the entire underground car park, dedicated exclusively to the Metro, AeroTrain and AeroBus connections.

With its 30 lift towers at a capacity for 25 people each, it speeds up access from the public transport lines to the highest tier level.

The surrounding solar cover provides protection and energy to power the huge interior holographic screens, which are easily visible from the second and upper tier levels. The first level, which is more expensive, has individual screens on each seat.

To resolve the delicate issue of seating numbers, it was decided not to exceed 50,000 spectators. The continuous drop in attendance at live events, caused by the incessant improvements in holography and home teleappearance, suggested a smaller stadium. This issue was controversial at the time, as Madrid had a brand new and very expensive stadium holding 90,000 people. History would end up proving the African design right, as Madrid 2116 did not manage to get past 38,000 spectators on any day during its Games, except for the opening day.

Nairobi 2120 was packed almost every day, largely due to the expectations created by the unknown hurdler Djana Finnley, with a chance to beat the mythical record set by Jocelyn March back in the 2060 Olympics in Cairo. The outcome of the spectacular 400m hurdles race for women is already well known to the reader.
