History

The evolution of container shipping, with a global traffic record never surpassed during the 50s of the past century, went through several stages. The energy challenge of the 2030s, with gigantic ships carrying up to 30,000 TEU, became unprofitable only five years later. The covert energy war, due to the drastic cheapening of renewables, coupled with oil prices and the political commitment of more than two thirds of the nation states of the time to reduce carbon emissions, ruined more than one shipping corporation.

Nuclear fission power appeared to be an environmentally friendly solution for the mega-ships of the 2050’s. They did not pollute the ports and allowed for unprecedented levels of supply. It was in that decade that robotic assistants for all container handling tasks became established.

Today, more than 60 years later, these tasks are no longer performed by humans. Logistic algorithms far surpass, in terms of speed and efficiency, any person in front of a computer. The entire stevedoring ecosystem, from the new hypercavitation-powered ships to the smallest pallet truck, is governed by algorithms coordinated in real time. A single engineerist oversees all activity at each container terminal. ValenciaPort, the largest port in the Mediterranean, still holds the record for the fastest container throughput, with 6,980 container movements in a single day per terminal. And it has 9 loading and unloading terminals.

The Caterpillar ConKrane CK-4 is the most widely used container handler in the world. Its light weight and stability enables the highest stacking and trailer loading speeds, allowing large harbour cranes to reduce their loading and unloading times on fast TwinKargo Class vessels.
